Can Picafort is located in Alcudia bay, 60kms north east of Palma de Mallorca on the north coast of the island. Most of the residents here live in the town of Santa Margalida which is about 10 kms inland from Can Picafort. It's the main holiday resort in the Santa Margalida area and also has the largest concentration of archaeological sites on the entire island. There are over 150 sites here, most of which date back to pre-Roman times. The most famous of these is the Son Real Necropolis, or "Cemetery of the Phoenicians".
C'an Picafort mainly caters for German tourists. They seem to be everywhere! Most of the bars and restaurants focus on attracting German visitors. More recently, British tourists have flocked to the resort. English is spoken in most of the bars.
There's a huge promenade here that's lined with restaurants and bars - perfect for having an drink and watching the sunset. It stretches all the way from the marina and fishing harbour, to the Son Baulo area of the town.
The Baulo district is also where you'll find the best beaches in the resort. There's also a small protected nature reserve here where you can see a wide variety of wildlife including; Mediterranean tortoises, red pheasants, hares, rabbits, weasels, dormice and even Algerian hedgehogs. They all contribute to making this area one of great environment significance.
The beaches here have good facilities and are very clean. It will cost you around 10.50¤ to hire two sun beds and an umbrella for the day.
If you want to go to Alcudia for the day you can easily take the bus. There's a a regular service from Playa de Muro into the town. It only costs 1 euro per person for a one way trip. If you were to get a taxi it would cost around 10 euros.
At the beginning of the sixties, Can Picafort was a small fishing village with just 200 inhabitants. By the 1970's it had transformed into a popular tourist resort with 8,750 hotel beds. Nowadays it's one of the most important resorts on the island, offering a wide variety of services and attracting a huge amount of visitors each year, from all over Europe and beyond. |
